Tom “the Hammer” Hammonds is a former NBA basketball player who transitioned into a professional drag racer. A Georgia Tech star drafted ninth overall in the 1989 NBA Draft, he started his racing career as a hobby during the offseason before fully dedicating himself to the sport after his retirement from basketball in 2001.

Basketball career

College: Hammonds played for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets from 1985 to 1989, where his No. 20 jersey was retired. He was named the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1986 and was a two-time All-ACC team member.

NBA: A first-round pick by the Washington Bullets, Hammonds played 12 seasons in the NBA as a power forward, also suiting up for the Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Drag racing career

Early racing: Hammonds began drag racing during his NBA career. In the early 1990s, he raced a 1969 Camaro in the National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) “Fastest Street Car” shootout during the off-season’s. His car was so fast it was instrumental in creating the “Outlaw Pro Street” class.

NHRA Pro Stock: He moved up to the professional ranks of the NHRA in 1996, competing in the Pro Stock class. He entered the NHRA circuit full-time after retiring from basketball. As a Pro Stock driver, he had three final-round appearances.
Team ownership: Hammonds is also a drag racing team owner and briefly stepped away from the sport in the mid-2000s to run an automotive dealership before returning to racing with his own engine program.

Return to NMCA: In recent years, he has returned to the NMCA, racing a new, powerful 1969 Camaro in the Edelbrock Xtreme Street class.
